Recently, I had the honor of viewing a Samsung commercial that had an outcome that I didn’t expect. The commercial was made up of 5-10 frames that exhibited a professional cyclist participating in a race. This was no ordinary race – in fact it seemed to be a race that spanned globally, for there were backdrops that displayed different climates, from severe cold as in the Arctic to severe heat, where firefighters rushed to put out wildfires. This cyclist began the race at the starting line with many other cyclist, but through each frame the viewer could see that this particular cyclist was taking the lead and hurdling through insurmountable circumstances in order to make it to the finish line. As the commercial came to a close, and when it was evident to the viewer that this brave and strong bicyclist was going to cross the finish line and win the race, we suddenly see this cyclist look back for the first time. In my mind I’m thinking, “No don’t look back,” “Keep going, you’re going to lose the race that way – worrying about what’s behind you!” Before I could finish my thought process, I realized this cyclist was quickly stepping aside, smiling, and encouraging those behind him to finish the race. I noticed that some of the cyclist were on his team and many were not. As the commercial came to a close, these powerful, thought-provoking words appeared across the screen, “We are greater than I.”
Laying Down Your Life
How often do we run the race of life alone, jumping through insurmountable hurdles, fires, and storms? How often do we forge ahead and not think about those who are behind us – looking towards us in amazement, excitement, and as role models, yet, we do not reach our hands back to lift someone else up or show them the way? This Samsung commercial is the epitome of God’s infinite love and wisdom. John 15:13 says, “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friend.” Literally, we see this verse of scripture as being willing to die for another, which Jesus did for us on the cross. I also feel that this verse can be interpreted in the sense of laying down everything that involves life, such as time, interests, desires, etc. in order to show love towards another. In other words, giving ourselves so that others may have a chance to win. Proverbs 27:17 says, “Iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.” In this Samsung commercial, the lead cyclist was forging a path and giving those behind him a vision of what it looks like to move forward in spite of the adversity at hand. In turn, the onlookers were encouraged and motivated to keep going until they too reached the finish line.
Friend, will you embrace the mantra, “We are greater than I?” Someone out there may need a friend. Someone may be looking for another to reach back and lift them up. Perhaps your spouse, children or an extended family member needs to see and hear, “I love you and I need you.” Will you answer that call today? Maybe you are that someone in need. I pray that this blog post has been an encouraging word to keep you moving forward in confidence that God answers prayer and that you are never alone.
Lord, we know that You are greater than all things in our life. Nothing comes by surprise to you. Today, we ask that those around us will answer the call – to lay down their life to bless another.
